Cell Phone - Pocket Microscope

Innovation Cell Phone - Pocket Microscope

I have placed here at this blog over the years (2006-2012) innovative developments that I found of interest and I think other readers would find interesting too due to the unique way in which an innovation captures the imagination by the sheer ingenuity of its creator.

The Scientist Magazine has, for the last 4 years, been running the Top 10 Innovations contest and this innovative creation (below) by UCLA electrical engineer Aydogan Ozcan won first place and is called LUCAS (Lensless, Ultra-wide-field Cell monitoring Array platform based on Shadow imaging).

It is an easy-to-use, pocket-size holographic microscope that weighs less than 50g, uses inexpensive, off-the-shelf parts, and can be attached to a cell phone’s camera, making it ideal for diagnosing disease in isolated, developing countries.
